On the 19th and 20th of June, Afu-Ra, Gentleman and Ras Kassa took over the streets of New York to film the video for the upcoming single "Why Cry".
The Vibe: the visuals of “Why Cry” are rough around the edges, hard-core and reality driven, just like the lyrics of the track. The video is shot documentary style capturing the true sense of the beauty of the ghetto and the nuances that
surround it. Reality shots depict the troubles found throughout the world at large and particularly in the storyline of a youth who meets his death in the streets of New York City.
RAS KASSA
Probably one of the Jamaican film industry's most promising directors, Ras Kassa chose to take on music videos largely because of his love for reggae music, which has spilled over into recent success and recognition in the States. Kassa recalls being immersed in the arts from a young age in Kingston, Jamaica. When school days came to an end, he dabbled a bit in music eventually finding his calling in film. He had spent 6 years in the local film industry before single-handedly directing his first video, TOK's “Deadly Medley”. Fast forwarding just a few short years later, Kassa lensed international reggae star BeenieMan’s “Dude” video for the grammy nominated Red Star Def Jamaican album. Holding at top 5 positions for several weeks on MTV and BET’s Hits Countdowns, word of Kassa’s ability to capture the essence of an artist was begining to spread. “I have a responsibility as a yute in dis business to maintain the culture. Mi love music, it's a part a we culture and I want to preserve dat wid the skills that I have, making videos…making anything visual". Kassa recently directed the latest single, “JamRock” for grammy winner Damian Marley as well as two projects for legendary artist Willie Nelson off his upcoming album "Countryman".
AFU-RA
Proud affiliate of the Gang Starr foundation, New York’s legendary hip-hop crew, 27-year-old Afu-Ra has taken the world by storm with his first two albums Body of the Life Force and Life Force Radio. Afu-Ra is not your average MC. He’s an intelligent man, a father, a devout reader, and a dedicated Tae Kwon Do student. Unlike the millions of rhyme slingers with catchy, colorful monikers, his name has special significance. It was taken from The Egyptian Book of the Dead, which details the story of a man on a course of destruction who looks within himself to overcome his obstacles. Inspired by the parable, Afu-Ra chose his name, which signifies the body of the life force, and ultimately represents the embodiment
of everything that creates life. His third album "State of The Arts” is out on Life Force Records / Decon and features Gentleman, Kardinal Offishall, Masta Killa (Wu Tang Clan), Royce Da 5'9", DJ Premier and more.
GENTLEMAN
Gentleman reigns from Germany, and has been making noise in the European and Caribbean markets for a few years now. About 10 years ago Gentleman was an amateur to Reggae music, and owned only a few records which he took from his brother's collection. He travelled to Jamaica and his story quickly began his musical pilgrimage from there. When you hear his music it is hard to believe how much this artist has progressed from his recent beginnings. He is just now beginning to receive recognition in the US market, and it's not soon enough. This man will join the ranks of lasting legends like Garnett Silk and Luciano whose music will bless our hearts for decades to come.
